What a Revelation for me.
For years I wanted to make room for my talents, so I went out to sing here, to perform there, to do this or that I felt great at first, but I never felt fulfilled. So what was wrong? I had the wrong idea about what my true gift was.
In today we have many people and leaders telling us what we need to do. We have leaders telling us that we need make room for our gift and go some place where we can use our gifts and our talents. We need to do this so we can live out our dream, presuming that our dream is to make a living doing what we enjoy doing the most. Initially, I imagined myself a singer going out singing because that is always what I wanted to do. So if I teach my kids to go after their dreams everything will be alright. I was under the impression that following after your dreams and serving your gift meant for me to be a singer for a living, or something else related to acting or maybe for you it's dancing, but this is what I came to realize this morning: I can't do that. I won't do that. And this is why: I may be able to make a living from living the "dream," but I can't live making my "dream" of singing come true. I'm made for more than that! There's got to be something more to life. I recall going after my dream and realizing that I was not fulfilled and I wondered what was going on. I felt great for sure! But after a while I felt unfulfilled and in fact I felt divided because I was playing music here but I wanted it to be all for God not just for a little or even 90% even though I would mention God in my songs, I wasn't centered; something felt off when I was living to make myself great. Here is what I came to realize.
I'm so glad I realized this before my children came to light. Because if I tell them to go after their dreams but not live for Christ, then I caused them to miss the mark. But if I teach them to see what the true gift and talent is, then they will never be lost, except for lost in the love of Jesus Christ who created them. Hallelujah and Amen.
"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his [great] joy went and sold all he had and bought that field." Matthew 13:44
I came to realize this: My talent is the kingdom of God. My gift (i.e. treasure) is the kingdom of God. There is another scripture that says this: "A gift opens the way and ushers the giver into the presence of the great." (Proverbs 18:16) Jesus said this to us: "On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles." (Matthew 10:18) The Psalmist said, "I will speak of your statutes before kings and will not be put to shame," (Psalm 119:46) The wise teacher said, "Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank." (Proverbs 22:29)
I want to be skilled in listening to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is my gift. The kingdom of God is my gift. I can't have it any other way. I can not serve my gifts as in my abilities (drawing, painting, singing, laughing), that's just too small. But my gift will serve God. If the Holy Spirit is my gift, that means that my gift will not ultimately serve me, but my gift will help me serve God Almighty who brought His only Son, Jesus Christ to the earth to save us. "Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!" (2 Corinthians 9:15) My revelation is this: my gifts and my talents were never my ability to draw, or my ability to sing, paint, dance, speak, or even teach. It is to be lead by the gift of the Holy Spirit to serve God most high. This is my prayer for you, that you will be lead by the power of his grace in the Holy Spirit to serve God. My prayer for myself is to not to focus on my abilities to make room for them, but that I may yield to that which makes room for me to preach the kingdom of God in his grace to bring other people in the this wonderful and indescribable gift. We will be lead by the power of the Holy Spirit. What joy! God bless you today! May God bless you in everything that you do in His grace. God bless you
