Two Ways to Maintain Healthy Spiritual Teeth and Why

Putting confidence in an unreliable person in times of trouble is like chewing with a broken tooth or walking on a lame foot.  Proverbs 25:19

In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Hebrews 5:12

Proverbs speaks about an unfaithful/unreliable friend like leaning on or eating with a broken tooth. Apostle Paul also said that the young or immature spiritually only drink milk like a baby and they are not able to eat solid foods like meat.

I know this seems elementary, but we have to ask: Why would someone only be able to drink liquids?

There are two reasons I want to highlight .

1. They are too young.

2. They have poorly used teeth.

Let's look at number 1:

Apostle Paul told the leaders in 1 Corinthians 3:2:   "I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for solid food. In fact, you are still not ready."  He is referring to Christians who have not yet grown up and developed teeth, but he is talking spiritually.  There are those who have been Christians perhaps for a while, but have not grown into spiritual adults. So how can a Christian grow into a spiritual adult?  Highlighted soon.

Let's look at number 2:

Putting confidence in an unreliable person in times of trouble is like chewing with a broken tooth or walking on a lame foot.  Proverbs 25:19

There are many possibilities for getting a broken tooth, but let's say a tooth is broken only by eating foods.  How does this happen?   The most common case is due to the fact that a person with a broken tooth may eating poorly or eating the wrong foods.  When the tooth is broken it is difficult to chew solids.

A person with strong teeth can eat solid foods and mash them enough to digest them and make himself more productive through it.   But the one with broken or no teeth has to only take in milk or liquid drinks because he can not chew solid foods.

When I thought of this, I understand that we have a spiritual body as well as the physical body.  And the spiritual body has teeth as well so to speak.  And those teeth chew and digest our life experiences and nurtures the body to be more productive in its day to day tasks.  What Apostle Paul is saying is some Christians do not have the spiritual teeth yet developed.

How do these two things happen in our spiritual lives?  How can we live day to day and not spiritually grow?  Or how do we get "bad" spiritual teeth?

There  are two ways:

1. We avoid hardship, problems, or trials.   Instead of joyfully eating them.

The Bible says,

Romans 5:3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,"

James 1:3  "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance."

2. We don't get into and chew on God's word daily.

2 Peter 1:4-8 says,

And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world's corruption caused by human desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What is the result?

When I thought of this I saw spiritual teeth and these spiritual teeth, I saw when they are strong they can digest hardship suffering pain anguish and become strong through it.   The hardship , suffering, pain a lot of times through persecutions is like protein-filled meats that make our spiritual apparatus incredibly strong in Christ because after the meat is digested it makes you stronger spiritually and more able to lift others out of spiritual pits.

But those who never eat this kind of meat, never giving their spiritual teeth opportunity of use cause their teeth to deteriorate.  Or perhaps believers avoided eating solid foods and meats and only ate the sweets and candies of life.  What are the sweets?  Perhaps the sweets are only good times all the time and only delightful news all the time.   Although these things are good, our spiritual teeth were never made to only eat sweet things and at the same time maintain very strong spiritual teeth.

Like proverbs says, an unreliable person is a person who is not able to eat solid foods.   He may be spiritually weak or malnourished.   He only ate candy all the time.  And so their teeth are no longer dependable.  Have you ever tried to chew using a tooth that was no good?   Let's make sure we have strong spiritual teeth!  Let's ask God for courage to not avoid hardships and with joyful confidence live to the fullest each day.  Let's pray and read God's word daily so we can be strong and properly chew and digest all of the nutrients life gives us.    It's use is to chew but they are no longer strong enough to eat the meat they are given in our life.   Let's be spiritually strong and mature Christians so we can lift each other up in our times of need.
